Over the years I have had the privilege of spending time with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and while they may not know me all that well, they have inspired me beyond measure in my spiritual life. To me they embody a holiness that I find remarkable. They seem truly at peace and happy with their chosen path like so many in religious orders (the peaceful faces of the cloistered Dominican nuns and the Franciscan sisters also come to mind).
While I started painting with the intention of creating art solely for myself, I couldn’t shake the notion that I should be painting the Friars. I wanted to represent them in a way that would honor them and convey their dedication to a life of prayer and service. From my perspective that meant showing them living out their call to help others in need and to portray them simply in prayer or in some other spiritual manner. It was always my intention to eventually use these paintings to raise money for the friars by auctioning them off at a fundraising event, which is currently in the planning stages.
